In the article the practice of Article 3 application of the European Convention on Human

Rights and Fundamental Freedoms by the European Court of Human Rights is examined.

The main attention is paid to the cases concerning mental sufferings and their division

into categories depending on their consequences, namely cruel treatment and causing

mental sufferings.

Key words: tortures, cruel treatment, humiliation of human dignity, cases concerning

mental sufferings.
